Dating Conduct: 10 Good Tips for You

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Alex Carter 1. Don’t smoke on your first date unless that is something that has been discussed as acceptable or you just cannot help but to do it. It is a habit viewed as a deal breaker and completely unacceptable to many so it is obviously bad dating conduct. 2. The same tip goes for drinking as it is a conduct of dating, or normal behavior for that matter, that can be dangerous and deadly. Unless you met with alcohol around, which is not uncommon, save this type of behavior for further down the line. 3. Instead of only opening doors or being polite to your date, make sure that you are doing the same for other people in the room. While it is important to make your date feel special, it is also good dating conduct to show them your good side on a regular basis. 4. Arrogance is bad under any circumstance, but as far as dating conduct goes, it is a date killer. You can be confident and you can be successful, but being arrogant is bad, bad, bad. 5. Stay away from hot button issues like politics, religion, and abortion while on your first few dates as they will inevitably end up causing disaster and chaos. Try to stay on humorous stories of your experiences, family stories, movie, or music talk…nothing that could erupt into mass violence. 6. This may seem like a repeat of #3, but don’t argue or be purposely rude to anyone in the room while still in the infant stages of your relationship. Arguing with waiters or putting down less fortunate or poorly dressed people is something that shows your dark side and is bad dating conduct. 7. Do everyone in the room, your family, and the rest of the world a favor and listen to your date when he or she is talking. Don’t speak only of or about yourself and your experiences, listen to them and ask questions about their life and interests. 8. There is a fine line between dressing extravagantly and dressing nicely, but both are far from dressing like a bum. Don’t show up with holes in your clothes or too many wrinkles or stains or whatever, it is better to be overdressed than looking like a hobo. 9. Hygiene is a major part of dating conduct as showering should go without saying, but smelling good and combing your hair seems to be more optional than ever. Make yourself presentable, not like you are going to a wedding, but more like (this sounds bad) going to work. Have pride in your appearance! 10. Don’t cuss and swear your way through conversations during your early dating stages. This comes off as being very rude and juvenile. Doing this is very bad dating conduct and will result in a lot of nights at home alone. How to Make Cold Process Soap

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Sarah Freeland The process of making cold process soap is very simple. First you will need safety equipment including goggles and rubber gloves. Next you will need a scale to measure out your ingredients and additives, a large stainless steel pot, measuring cups, a stirring spoon to use only for the lye, a stirring spoon to use only with the essential oils, two kitchen thermometers that can measure over 100 degrees, wax paper to line the molds with, cardboard to act as a lid to the mold, and a soap mold. For the soap itself you will need a combination of fatty acids like cocoa butter, olive oil, sesame oil, shea butter, and coconut oil. Finally you will need the additives for our soap including fragrance oils and colorants. After you have gathered your equipment and ingredients together your next step in the how to make cold process soap tutorial is to mix together your water and lye, which is also referred to as sodium hydroxide or caustic soda. Stir slowly to combine the water and lye together. Bring this mixture up to 100 degrees. While your lye solution is slowly heating up, you will want to melt your shortening, remove it from the heat and then add in the rest of your fats. Bring the fats back up to 100 degrees. Then combine the lye solution with the fats. At this point in the how to make cold process soap tutorial you will need to refer to your soap recipes to determine what fragrances and colorants to use. Make sure that you follow the soap making recipe when it comes to amounts. Use your scale to weigh out ingredients. After all of your ingredients have been mixed together you can then pour, or spoon your soap into molds. Let the soap mixture stand in the molds for about twelve hours. Then you can unmold the soap. Finally allow your soap to cure for several weeks to a month before you use it. This curing process will allow your soap to mellow out. Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Charles Donovan Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Chronic or Treatment-Resistant DepressionAbout Vagus Nerve Stimulation(VNS)VNS is not brain surgery, although it is a treatment that affects the function of the brain. Vagus Nerve Stimulation uses specific stimulation of the vagus nerve to send stimulation to specific parts of the brain that are involved in mood. It is not like Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT), a treatment that involves stimulation of the entire brain and induces convulsions in patients. In fact, patients may not even feel the stimulation from VNS since the vagus nerve does not have the type of nerves that carry pain signals. Nor does VNS interfere with drugs, and patients having Vagus Nerve Stimulation can continue taking their other drugs without worrying about side effects or interactions between drugs. What is the Vagus Nerve ? Vagus means “wandering” in Latin, and is the perfect description for the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the body. It averages almost two feet in length and “wanders” throughout the upper body. The vagus nerve starts in the brain, goes down the neck and into the body where if affects the vocal cords, the acid content of the stomach, the heart, the lungs, and other organs. In the brain it projects to areas believed to be responsible for seizures, mood, appetite, memory and anxiety (note 3). However, the vagus nerve cord does not have many pain nerves, so stimulation of the vagus nerve is not painful, although some patients may feel some sensation when electrical pulses are generated. The History of Vagus Nerve Stimulation Vagus Nerve Stimulation has been used to treat epilepsy patients for years; the first human clinical trial was in 1988,(note 1) and the FDA approved VNS therapy for epilepsy in 1997 (note 2). So far over 22,000 people worldwide have had VNS therapy (note 3), and it has proven to be a safe and effective treatment for epilepsy. These patients have reported minimal side effects, which have tended to decrease over time. The efficacy of the treatment has also been shown to increase with longer treatment time (note 1). When Vagus Nerve Stimulation was first approved for epilepsy, some patients reported an improvement in mood. Researchers decided to design a study specifically to measure changes in a patient’s mood and depression due to stimulation of the vagus nerve. In 1999, scientists began the first open label (no placebo group) study for depression with 60 patients. This first study found that there was indeed an improvement in mood for depressed patients. Based on this study, a more detailed and thorough study was designed to determine if Vagus Nerve Stimulation would be a safe, tolerable and effective treatment for chronic depression. The recently completed one-year, double blind, placebo controlled trial had 235 patients from 21 participating hospitals in the United States, and showed clinically significant improvements due to treatment compared to baseline (note 2). The acute (short-term) phase lasted three months, during which half of the patients received stimulation (treatment group) and half did not (control group). The long-term phase of the study lasted an additional 9 months (for one year total treatment) of stimulation. The HRSD-24 (24 item clinician-rated Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression) improvements observed over the first year were highly significant. The results of this long-term, pivotal study were submitted to FDA in October 2003; the FDA’s decision on the use of Vagus Nerve Stimulation for depression is not anticipated before October 2004 (note 2). Of note, Vagus Nerve Stimulation therapy was approved for use in patients with treatment resistant depression in the European Union in March 2001, and in Canada in April 2001 (note 2) . How Does Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy work ? The Pulse Generator (battery) delivers a small amount of electrical current to the vagus nerve intermittently (30 seconds on and five minutes off ) (note 3) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for up to 10 years. The stimulation is delivered automatically, so the patient does not have to do anything. Because there is nothing to remember, compliance is assured. The stimulation is not supposed to be uncomfortable, and some patients do not even feel the stimulation. A nurse at the doctor’s office can adjust the level of stimulation (amount of electricity delivered) if the patient ever feels uncomfortable. In the study currently being reviewed by the FDA, researchers noted several similarities between epileptic and depressed patients (note 4). One of the most important similarities is that Vagus Nerve Stimulation treatment efficacy improves over time. The longer the patient receives stimulation, the better the results. In addition, both populations of patients share the following: Assured adherence to treatment regimen Safety of the procedure Safety of the therapy High continuation rates No drug interactions What is the surgery like? Vagus Nerve Stimulation is NOT brain surgery, even though it is an invasive surgical procedure that changes the function of the brain. The stimulator is a pacemaker-like device that generates electrical pulses (Pulse Generator); it is implanted under the skin in the left chest through a small incision. While this may sound like a serious or dangerous procedure, it is not. The FDA has approved the use, and confirmed the safety of this procedure, and 22,000 patients have received the implant to treat epilepsy. The Vagus Nerve Stimulation surgery involves two small incisions, one in the chest and one at the lowest part of the neck. At no time is the brain physically manipulated by the surgeon. The surgery to implant the NCP System takes 45 minutes to two hours. Local, regional or general anesthesia (putting the patient to sleep) is used during the surgery; the doctor and anesthetist determine which type of anesthesia is best for each patient. Most Vagus Nerve Stimulation patients will have outpatient surgery, (note 3) but some patients may need to stay in the hospital overnight, and in that case they will need a family member or companion to take them home from the hospital.Learn more about this remarkable device at www.VagusNerveStimulator.com Charles E. Finding a Quality Cigar Store

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Eddie Tobey The cigar shop of yesteryear has been increasingly replaced by a virtual version that offers the same wide variety of cigar brands, humidors and accessories, but knows no geographical boundaries and offers products at a fraction of the cost. Truly, online cigar stores have played a major role in the cigar boom of the last decade, revolutionizing the industry and making the purchasing of cigars cheap, hassle-free and anonymous. Cigar stores both on and offline provide a large assortment of brands, from the inexpensive to the premium. Some of the most popular brands in the U.S. include the many varieties of Macanudos, as well as Montecristos and Nat Shermans. They come with a full range of prices that appeal to both the serious aficionado and the occasional, recreational smoker. Of course, the most sought after type of cigar remains the Cuban variety, which makes them both more expensive and more difficult to find. Fortunately for cigar lovers, the onset of the Internet in addition to the relaxation of government sanctions regarding the importation of Cuban goods has made it much easier for U.S. citizens to enjoy the many Cuban flavors available for the serious smoker. In addition to cigars, cigar stores stock various accessories available for purchase. The most common, and the most essential item is the humidor, which serves to preserve, protect and display a collection of cigars. Humidors vary greatly in shape and size, from a small box holding just a few items, to a full, climate controlled room, but each serves to provide the optimum temperature and humidity for lasting flavor. Other products available include containers, cigar cutters, lighters and cases. Cuban Crafters, an online cigar store featuring premium cigars as well as a full range of accessories, even offers gift packages for cigar lovers of all kinds. While some cigar aficionados still enjoy the occasional trip to their local smoke shop, online cigar stores are clearly the wave of the future and can be credited in large part for the dramatic increase in sales to the U.S. since the early 1990s. Cigars Info provides comprehensive information on cigar smoking, Cuban cigars, discount cigars, humidors, lighters, boxes, and more. Cigars Info is the sister site of Humidors Web. Tips On How To Care For Fresh Cut Tropicals

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Willie Jones You can do your own tropical flower arrangements and add life to your office or home. Tropical flowers are generally much hardier than their softer cousins. They are brilliantly colored and have a longer shelf life especially if you care for them properly. Here are some things you can do to maximize their life: 1) Every type of fresh cut flower will produce a certain amount of ethylene gas during shipping but this can be taken care of by immediately unwrapping them and submersing them completely in a room temperature bath or large tub of water for 10 to 20 minutes. This applies to almost all the tropicals except for the fuzzy protease and most orchids. 2) Cut the stem of your tropicals about an inch from the bottom at about a 45-degree angle. The slant ensures that the stem will draw the maximum amount of water. Do this several times during the week and you will extend their life. 3) Tropicals grow in warm rainy climates and they enjoy being wet. For this reason keep your tropicals away from drafts and cool places and direct sunlight. Spray mist them daily to keep the moisture content up. In nature tropical blooms have pods facing upward, as they like to pool water in them. You can also do this with your fresh cuts. 4) If you find that the water gets cloudy then put a few drops of bleach in the water. This helps to prevent bacteria from growing and this will not hurt the flowers. 5) Make sure that when you design your flowers in a vase that you do not have any greens below the water line. This will rapidly decay the rest of the arrangement. 6) If you have purchased bird of paradise for your arrangement and they are not open, you can gently ease them apart by taking your index finger or thumb and slowly push your way at the base of the flower and force the blooms up. Most tropicals will last between 7 to 14 days if properly taken care of. I have seen cymbidium orchids last as long as 3 weeks. So enjoy these vibrant exotic flowers in your home or office. Depression and Weight: An Undeniable Connection

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Danna Schneider There has been some recent press about the long speculated correlation between one’s weight and depression, or state of mind. Well, new studies are showing that overweight or obese people are significantly more prone to depression and mood disorders, which is contrary to the popular myth of the “fat and jolly” individual. This newest study, which consisted of more than 9,000 adults of both male and female sex, found that obese individuals were approximately 25 percent more likely to suffer from depression than their slimmer counterparts. Not only that, but contrary to earlier theories that obese women may have been more prone to depression than overweight men, the newest findings show that both men and women suffering weight problems are equally as likely to battle depression. But the question still remains, why is depression more common in the obese segment of the population, and what are some of the theories as to why this is the case? While these new studies provide almost irrefutable evidence that obesity is strongly linked to depression and other mood disorders, there are unfortunately no definite answers as to why exactly this is true. There are theories of course, and there are also many documented cases of patients who are obese or simply over a healthy weight standard that are also suffering from depression and mood swings. I’m sure if you think about it, you may be able to come up with someone in your life who you can make this correlation with. It may even be you. As I previously mentioned, there are a number of theories as to why depression occurs so much more often in people who are obese or overweight. One common sense theory is the simple fact that an individual may feel inferior or out of control if they have lost control over their weight. They may emotionally beat themselves up over and over because they view themselves as “fat”, which has a direct impact on their every day interactions with people, their self esteem, and therefore leads to depression and feelings of sadness, lethargy and hopelessness. This may seem the most obvious of all theories, and it is, but it nonetheless is a very valid theory. Another theory, which has been discussed in numerous diet and health books is the link between depression and weight through blood sugar and other key chemicals in the body and the brain which can be upset by the presence of obesity and a poor diet. The blood sugar link is the one I believe is most likely to be true, as I know from a personal perspective for me, when my blood sugar is bottoming out, I am the last person you’d want to be around. Not only am I unpleasant, but I start to have feelings of despair, anxiety and anger for no apparent reason. Then, once my blood sugar is regulated again through means of “healthy” food, I’m back to my pleasant self, and those much-needed feelings of well being. This is not to discount other theories, as I think they all kind of work together. Weight and depression can become a vicious cycle for many of us. When we’re thinner, we tend to feel better about ourselves, which produces more endorphins and feelings of happiness, which happens to also suppress our appetite, which in turn keeps us on the “thin track”, and vice versa. When we feel down or depressed, we may tend to overeat or binge on comfort foods as a temporary means of feeling good again, which in turn makes our weight balloon, which in turn makes us feel bad about our body image…. and so on and so forth. You get the picture. Weight and depression in itself can become a vicious cycle, if we don’t learn to harness the power of our mind and take control of our bodies and our health. Not only will it lead to a more slender, heart healthy and longer-living you, but chances are, it will also lead to a much happier, mentally alert and content you. And that’s worth more than any size five jeans in my book. Subconscious Weight Loss, Knowledge Is Power

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Jean Lam One of the most intrinsic desires of people all around the world is being capable of following a successful weight loss plan, and getting rid of a those extra pounds that make them uncomfortable. However it seems that this task becomes increasingly difficult with time, and people actually end up gaining weight instead of losing it, but why does that happen? The fact is that people are not actually aiming to become someone different, they are actually trying to stop being themselves, which is completely wrong. You should not aim to stop being an obese individual; instead you should focus your efforts in becoming the ideal individual that you have ever dreamt of. It may seem as if this weight loss method is just some mumble jumble that will really not help at all, but it is not, you would be amazed to know how amazingly powerful your brain is. So, only by focusing on what you want, and stop focusing your efforts in avoiding what you dont want, you will be able of following an efficient weight loss program which will eventually transform you in the physical person that you want to become. Following a weight loss plan requires discipline, and it requires your complete dedication and motivation; if you are not truly aiming to become a slender person, then you will eventually gain that weight right back. Here is a practical exercise that you can perform which will provide a small demonstration of the power that your mind holds without you even realizing it, the power that may be used to compliment your weight loss efforts. Do this: the next time you wake up, think about a small improvement that you would like in your life, and try to keep it simple; then focus on picturing yourself living this improvement, and convince yourself that you will get it. As time passes, that improvement will definitely take place, trust me. There are many recent studies that you may read, which explain the reason of this interesting factor, but in the meantime, you need to know that subconscious programming is the most efficient weight loss method, just picture yourself being the physical person that you want to become, and convince yourself that following a weight loss plan is exactly what you are going to do, because you already know that you will lose weight. Do it for a few days, and you will marvel at the results. Background Check: For Good or Ill?

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Otto Mettarod Many jobs and credit applications require a background check. Peoples reactions to this requirement vary. Ive been in employment offices where individuals adamantly refused to give out some of their personal information for reasons of privacy. Ive also seen people give out their social security number and more without even stopping to think about it. We all seem to have an opinion about the wide variety of information that can be acquired about us, whether directly or through various information sources. Lets think about this for a moment. If you are going to be entrusted with cash, private records, proprietary information, or the health and well-being of other persons, wouldnt you want a background check if you were the person or the institution to whom such possessions and information belonged? Of course you would! You are not going to hand your wallet to a stranger on the street and assume they will return it with everything in place. Thats just about what an employer or lender would be doing if they did not check your background and your credit history. They need to feel safe about where they put their trust, just as you do. In my line of work, we require a background check on each and every employee. We have to. There is no way we can entrust our business to people we do not know without having some kind of reference information about them. It is a requirement. Too much is at risk not to require the background check. Yes, some background checks contain faulty information. That is true. Especially if you have a common name, there may be information in your file that is not yours. Consumers do have a responsibility to check their credit reports annually and correct any faulty information. No, you probably cant find or correct everything. We know that. But if your credit reports with all three agencies are correct, that counts and we do check one source against another. You have some input here. To update your credit report information and make any corrections, take advantage of getting your annual free report from all three major sources: Equifax.com, Experian.com, and Transunion.com. Or you can simplify it and order all three from www.annualcreditreport.com provided that your address can be verified on the request. Help us to help you when we have a reason to do a background or credit check! About the writer OttoMettarod worked for the credit bureau for 30 years.
